Thinking of Switching to a Natural Toothpaste
You're not alone.
The demand for natural and organic products is growing tremendously in the United States. Americans are becoming more health conscious and with that, they want to know exactly what is in the products they consume and come in contact with. The global market value for natural and organic cosmetics and personal care products is expected to grow from $40.2 billion in 2021, to $50.4 billion in 2027.
Yes, that’s “billion” with a “b”.
But with all this growing demand, a seemingly endless variety of “natural” and “organic” options have started popping up on store shelves and online. If you’re thinking about switching to organic or natural options, knowing where to start can feel daunting! And one of the biggest offenders of this is the ever-expanding toothpaste aisle.
Don’t worry though. You don’t need to be overwhelmed! If you’re ready to switch from your classic Colgate to something more natural, keep reading! We’re going to break things down for you.
Is Natural Toothpaste Actually Better for Your Teeth
Here’s the thing. There are a lot of misconceptions about using words like “natural” when describing products. Seriously, what does it even mean?
Simply put, the use of the word “natural” in product marketing (like when you see “natural toothpaste” for example) should tell you that nothing synthetic, artificial, or chemical has been added to the ingredients. And shockingly, many common toothpastes do contain ingredients that are synthetic and potentially harmful—we recommend that you avoid these at all costs!
Some of the common offenders are ingredients like fluoride, triclosan, propylene glycol, diethanolamine, and parabens. These ingredients are often added to toothpastes and can disrupt hormone function, cause irritation, and some studies have even linked these ingredients to types of cancer.
Yikes! Talk about some stuff you want to think twice about before consuming.
Fluoride is one of the most common ingredients and is suspected to have a significant impact on all parts of the body, including the cardiovascular, central nervous, digestive, endocrine, immune, integumentary, renal, respiratory, and skeletal systems. The increased addition of fluoride into common household items as well as toothpaste simply compounds its effect on our bodies!
So, while these ingredients may help a short-term issue, they may cause long-term effects on the body that goes well beyond any benefits you may notice from them. Our recommendation is to stay away and opt for natural ingredients when possible.
Healthy Alternatives to Using Toothpaste
The great news is, there are lots of ways to clean your teeth naturally! Here are a few:
- Oil Pulling—oil pulling is a great way to get fresher breath and cleaner teeth without the chemicals! It’s easy—learn how here.
- Rinse with water—it’s super easy, but a great way to keep your mouth fresh and clean is to simply rinse with water after you eat. I told you it was easy!
- Brush with baking soda and coconut oil—These ingredients are gentle on your mouth and a natural way to help keep your oral health in check.
- Cut back on the sugar!—It’s harmful to your teeth as well (and can impact your overall health as well).
- Use trace minerals as well as macro-minerals on a daily basis—My favorite is ConcenTrace Mineral Drops. This rinse will help promote fresh breath and a generally clean feeling—and it’s totally natural!
These tips are easy and inexpensive—and they’ll leave your mouth feeling fresh and healthy!
